WELCOME TO THE CHOMOLUNGMA EXPLORER SCOUT UNIT WEBSITE

We are an Explorer Scout Unit who meet at Groby Scout Headquarters and provide Explorer Scouting to Groby and the surrounding villages

We used to be part of Leicester West District until that District was disbanded due to lack of a District Team. That is the reason for our website address. We are now part of Leicester North East District.

Chomolungma (pronounced Cho-Mo-Lung-Ma) Explorer Scout Unit takes its name from the Tibetan name for Mount Everest. When Explorer Scouting was first started in Leicester West District there were 3 Units formed from the existing Venture Units. These were initially known as the Inner, Middle and Outer Units. However as Explorer Scouting was a District provision this meant that each Explorer Scout was a member of all three Units and therefore the three Units were effectively one Unit. The search was on for three new names, preferably related, for the three Units. One of the leaders from the Outer Unit, knew that Mount Everest had three names, it's English name (Mt. Everest), it's Nepalese name (Sagamartha) and it's Tibetan name (Chomolungma) and as Explorer Scouting started in West District in the same year as the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest the three names seemed appropriate. Three separate names for one entity.

The Inner Unit unfortunately disbanded due to a lack of leaders soon after its formation and the Middle Unit decided to keep their name.

The Unit organised a trip to Switzerland in 2006. You can read more about it on our Switzerland page. Photographs from the trip can be seen in our gallery.

Another Explorer Scout Unit in the District is Wet, Wet, West. They concentrate on water sports, particularly canoeing, and camping. They have their own website here.
